a companion that encourages me to notice

a companion that encourages me to notice; is a circular table and a rotatable stool enabling a 360 degree view of the surroundings. It lives, travels, deconstructs and adapts fluidly through the activation of the object/device (companion) and myself being present together, sharing time in differing environments. The table gives me the ability for consideration and understanding of space/place from a new perspective. I have created new shoes and accessories for the table that refract thoughts towards place and a sense of care towards the objects being in relation to situational presence.

I have built the table (companion) from birchwood and the accessories from various materials dependent on the thought: woven woolen socks for keeping warm in the winter months, steel wheels for navigating, moving and having physical ability to find a place in the Royal Scottish Academy gallery in Edinburgh, iron spikes for stability and time on the frozen sea in Finland, steel for extensions to see out and become level with the windows in Stow College, Glasgow in order to watch the passing cars and consider the surrounding situations beyond the institutional and architectural frameworks of the building.

The aims of this conscious anthropomorphising are to sensitively make adaptions depending on the time, situation and environment. To think about what can be learned from the things that exist around us, what they can utter, and what they can illuminate. To try to provide an equal exchange from the knowledge and encouragement; to notice what I believe I have received from my journey and process with the table, (companion), to share the reflection and acknowledgment of what I have noticed, through the process of time and existence.
